Mashable: Email is more popular than social media, study shows

Here’s something us email marketers have known for a while, but now has properly been studied: email is more popular than social media despite all the buzz, a study reported on by Mashable notes.

Actual email usage varies a lot per country. 94% of people in Hungary use email, while less than half the people having access to internet in Saudi Arabia use email.

Social media usage is high however in certain countries: Argentina, Russia and South-Africa see about 75% of its internet users use social media. USA is at 61% for social media usage. Read more

Facebook hires MailRank team, Messages services getting update

In a blog post on their website the MailRank team notes that they have been hired by Facebook effective this December. Remember Project Titan? Eventually it was launched as the new Facebook Messages in November last year. In the meantime things have been awfully quiet around the service – not to mention the very small amount of people diggin a @facebook.com email address.

MailRank is a small team dedicated to getting your email priorities right without technical fuzz, helping email users keeping a lid on their email volume. In the blog post, MailRank is not getting into details what they exactly will be working on, but with their email prioritizing experience chances are big that they will give the Facebook Messages service a push in the right direction.

Litmus posts early preview of Facebook Messages

Two days ago Paul from the Litmus-team (the email-test guys) posted some preview screens of Facebook Messages: he got his hands on an invite (lucky …) and had a quick look at how it works. It turns out that Facebook Messages by default shows the text version of messages, with URLs not being auto-linked:

After using the expand button at the top of the text version, the full html version is shown in a separate popover window:

According to Paul the quality of rendering is pretty good: loading happens in an iframe so the email code is mostly left alone. One thing he notes however is that Facebook puts in its own CSS rules, which could interfere with your own CSS in the email. One big bit of news that he mentions is that external images are not blocked:

Note that external images are not blocked. This is great news for email marketers. It would be nice if it didn’t default to the plain text view, but at least the HTML version is displayed pretty accurately.

Litmus is already tracking Facebook Messages usage in their Email Analytics tool: in the near future they will report on the market adoption to show the impact of Facebook Messages on the market of email clients.
